synopsis
Altec Lansing has consistently developed speaker products
for a wide range of computer users. From the budget minded gamer, to the
power user that demands that walls be blown down, there's traditionally
been a speaker system available for each end user. What we haven't seen
from Altec Lansing is a top of the line speaker system that offers some
of the latest technology in sound reproduction. More specifically, a concert
level feel that doesn't require a person to be sitting or standing in
front of the speakers to hear stereo sound. With the FX6021 speaker system,
power users have finally been given the product they've been wishing for.
Are you serious?
When
I first heard the FX6021 prototype speakers at CES 2004 in Vegas, I couldn't
believe the quality of sound they were producing ... it was like standing
in front of an entire orchestra. I was then instructed to "stand
wherever I wanted inside the room" and decided that 15 feet away
was adequate. To my absolute shock, I was still hearing the sounds in
complete stereo! So, it was with much anticipation that I was able to
listen to the speakers myself while listening to MP3s and of course, doing
some serious gaming. I was thrilled to actually hear the "InConcert"
technology at work, as no matter where I stood inside the room, I continued
to hear fantastic quality audio in stereo - an amazing trick.
FX6021 Series Specs
The feature list is very impressive and offers some technologies
that are absolutely not found anywhere else in the PC speaker market.
- Features InConcert™ Technology – The fusion
of pro audio line-array and tri-amp technologies, Altec Lansing’s
InConcert uses three separate amplifiers to power a total of 12 high-performance,
full-range Micro Drivers. A frequency filtering system beams intense,
concentrated audio straight out.
- Pure, Intelligible Sound – Crisp, clean sound feels
like it’s being directed right at you, without reverb from floors
and ceilings.
- Virtually No Volume Drop-Off – Whether you’re
sitting in front of the speakers or several feet away, you’ll
hear every nuance of sound.
- Exceptional Bass –Low frequency bass from a 6.5”
ported woofer set in a low-resonance wooden cabinet
- Slim, Flat-Panel Profile – Shielded satellites
look terrific next to your flat-panel screen or mounted on wall (base
is removable).
- Wireless Remote and Control Pod – Either way, control
of bass, treble and master volume levels is at your fingertips.
- Auxiliary Input Jack – Connect two different audio
sources – your PC and MP3 jukebox for example – at the same
time.
- Headphone Jack – For private listening.
Evaluation
Installation of the unit was extremely easy. I was very
interested in mounting the speakers on the wall to save my desk some space,
so that's exactly what I did. Now, with some other speaker sets I would
have hesitated to do such a thing, because it would have meant a degradation
in quality of sound - but not with these speakers that come with the InConcert
technology.
First, I had to try out audio sounds ... and I can say that
if you are looking to play some music from *any* source, then these speakers
will absolutely blow your socks off. The speakers are very, VERY loud
and don't degrade the quality of the music at all ... I was absolutely
shocked at how high I could go. The great thing about these speakers with
the music is that these really are top quality speakers, and can be used
for parties and other such events - not just for PC use. It makes a lot
of sense to carry a small MP3 player in your pocket, have these speakers
handy, and have your own portable speaker system ready for any social
event.
Playing games on the PC was a whole new experience. Anything
that offered stereo sound (most PC games do these days) was living through
a whole new experience. Even for friends who enjoy watching, the sound
was still in stereo with no degradation in the level of sound or quality,
so they were able to hear things that with any other speaker system they
wouldn't. Being able to hear absolute stereo effects with a 2.1 system,
as if it were a 7.1 system was amazing ... if it sounds like I'm raving
about the product, it's because I am. This is easily the best 2.1 speaker
set I've ever heard. Period.
Overall Comments
The Altec Lasning FX6021 is worth every single penny and
more that you will pay for it. It is the single finest speaker set created
for the PC because of the unreal quality of the speakers, the amount of
power they generate, and the amazing InConcert technology that will totally
stun people the first time they hear them.
Undoubtedly, these speakers are the ones to get if you plan
to do any serious listening of music or heavy gaming. For people that
love speaker systems and don't have the room on a desk to fit a 5.1 or
7.1 system, don't bother - a 2.1 speaker system makes much more sense
when technology such as InConcert is put into the speakers.
The performance of the FX6021s was top
notch - like I've said probably 4 times before in this review, this is
the finest sounding speakers I've ever heard in my life. The value is
top notch ... even though the MSRP is $299, they are easily worth much
more. The coolness factor is perfect - the InConcert technology and power
inside the speakers will absolutely blow away all your friends and easily
make you the most popular and feared person in town. These speakers are
also highly useful for both music listening, PC, and general use, as they
are powerful enough to use for a wide range of uses.
Overall, this is the best speaker set
I've seen in my 4 years reviewing products. The people at Altec Lansing
have made an absolute perfect product for consumers, and I can't rave
enough about how incredible they sound.
