Quake III

If you haven't heard of the Quake III benchmark, well, come out of your hole. It's a decent benchmark that's increasingly becoming obsolete, but nevertheless good for checking out what new cards offer against the old.

At 1280x1024 resolution level , numbers represent Frames Per Second (higher is better!) ...

And at the much more impressive 1600x1200 resolution level , numbers represent Frames Per Second (higher is better!) ...

Well the ATI AIW 9800 Pro, at lower cost and higher features up the wazoo goes toe-to-toe with the GFFX 5900 card which has double the RAM. Amazing value from ATI without a doubt!

Gun Metal Benchmark 2

We used the latest Gun Metal Benchmark 2 version 1.20S and used the default quality settings of the benchmark. This equates to 2XAA was enabled by the game and AF was disabled. We tested at 1024x768. This benchmark is one that seems to be wavering in popularity, but we wanted to see how things performed ... so ...

Well once again we're seeing the constant theme of the ATI All In Wonder 9800 Pro perform within 3 to 6% performance of the GeForceFX 5900 (which comes with double the amount of RAM). Fascinating!

Conclusions

Alright - you want a top of the line video card, you want all the features in the world, and you want to pay a decent price for it. You're perhaps dubious about ATI ... they're not the mainstream, you've heard rumors they perform better ... but should you buy it? Well, as you can tell from the benchmarks the ATI All In Wonder 9800 goes toe-to-toe with nVidia's top performing card, but sells for a lower street price. Now throw in the fact that this card can import in your cable television, acts as a video capture card, and comes with the Remote Wonder (NGE Editor's Choice award winner) which allows you to control your television set through a useful and easy-to-use remote control ... well you get the picture pretty quick that this card is the way to go.

We actually were able to hook up the card to an HDTV device and found that the card performs admirably, not "incredibly" , but well enough. There's actually a lot of potential in this card with HDTV support, so for those of you that want to show off your system on the top video monitors, you have the opportunity to hook it up to your regular monitor (use of included adapter required), you can use the DVI output, S-Video out, or the HDTV output.

ATI has made a definitive statement to the industry that they can release top of the line hardware that performs just as well as any video card on the market, along with their comprehensive retail package, all at a price that's amazingly competitive. There's no doubt about it - ATI has released one of the best products for upgrading your computer with the All In Wonder 9800 Pro video card. Amazing product and comes as highly recommended as anything we've reviewed in the three years this site has been publishing reviews.
