With
the ever increasing technology increases in the sound industry for PCs,
the importance of speaker systems has never been higher. Why blow $150
on a great sound card if you use an inferior speaker system? Undoubtedly,
PC uses alike need to invest in a quality speaker system - enter the Philips
MMS305 speaker solution.
The MMS305 set includes four flat panel speakers, a subwoofer, and a remote
control. The flat panel speakers are incredibly thin - no more than 1"!
The speakers attach to a plastic mounting piece that allows you to prop
the speaker up on your desk, or even mount them on your wall. Two speakers
are intended for "front" usage, meaning you set them in front
of you near your monitor. The other two have incredibly long connectors,
approximately twelve feet in length, designed for "surround sound"
rear speakers.
Installation
of the speaker system is not difficult, even for novice computer users.
The speakers all plug into the subwoofer, which is also connected to the
remote receiver, which is a very small white device. The input plugs included
easily attach from soundcard "front" and "surround"
inputs to subwoofer. All in all, a very simple installation process.

The MMS305
system boasts "wOOx" technology, which briefly explained, is
superior bass from a deceptively small enclosure. The front tiring design
adds depth to music and dynamic, powerful bass to games. You'll definitely
notice that the subwoofer, although somewhat compact, boasts a very nice
ambiance.
The magnetically
shielded (preventing harmful distortion to your monitor or television)
4 x 10W RMS speakers aren't the loudest you'll ever hear. If you're goal
is to get arrested for noise disturbances, then these speakers probably
won't get that job done. However, the flat panel speakers perform amazingly
consider their size! The soft flat panel satellite speakers offer high
quality performance with some great aesthetics. The totals on the speaker
system come to 80W total (RMS), which seems middle of the road for home
computer system speakers. So, from a loudness scale, it's middle of the
road, from a clarity and crispness of sound perspective these little dudes
perform extremely well.
One other feature of the MMS305 that's rather nice is the fact that it
has three distinct inputs for multiple devices. Want to connect your stereo
equipment to these speakers without having to constantly change wires?
How about that MP3 player? How about ANYTHING? Well, the MMS305's 2 free
inputs (taking 1 away for your computer) allows this very convenient feature.
The speaker system is "controlled" completely by remote control.
A funny note on the box, it distinctly reads:
"Easy-to-use
wireless remote control"
Aren't
all remote controls wireless? Isn't that what makes them remote? Anyway,
just some nit-picking there. This feature is one that you might like,
however, if you end up losing the remote control, will toil in agony about.
The remote controls the volute, on-off, bass, treble, and input controls.
There are no on-unit knobs or switches...everything is controlled, I stress,
by the remote unit. This might take a bit of getting used to, but it's
no inconvenience.
Overall
the Philips MMS305 speaker system is a very nice surround sound speaker
solution for your home computer. Instead of buying all the components
separately, this package of four speakers (which are mountable on your
wall, a HUGE space saving idea) and
subwoofer make it a great buy. Kudos to Philips for a fine system!
