DVD
of the Year (2002 )
The Count of
Monte Cristo - Buena Vista
This
is probably seen by many as an obscure choice for DVD of the Year
, however I see it as the most deserving of all the discs. I am
a big believer in quality over quanity. While many discs are filled
to the brim with enough extra features to give you viewing material
for days, alot of those features are fluff pieces, barely entertaining
... simply there to make the disc seem more "loaded".
Monte Cristo has 6 features, all of which are entertaining, informative,
and well thought out. The movie itself is also off the charts, definitley
Oscar worthy. The Count of Monte Cristo is definitley a disc that
should be a part of everyones DVD collection ... and it is my honor
to award it with this NextGenny.

Worst
DVD of the Year (2002 )
Don't Look
Down - Artisan
Throw
together everything that makes a disc bad, put it on one disc, and
you have Don't Look Down. This disc has barely one redeemable quality.
The film is predicatable, the picture is shoddy, the sound is poor,
and there are no extras. If you are a parent who doesn't believe
in spankings, making your kid watch this disc would be a good enough
punishment. Therefore it gets the least desired NextGenny.

Mentions : Cat People ( Universal ) , Kissing
Jessica Stein ( Fox ) , Hell's Gate ( Artisan ) |

Best
DVD You Don't Own (2002 )
The Asphyx
- All Day Entertainment
Little
did I think that when I sat down to watch this obscure film I would
fall in love with it, but that is exactly what happened. The Asphyx
is a lost gem, and All Day Entertainment should be praised for taking
it out of the jewlery box and shining it up real nice. This is a
great feature, with an awesome array of extras, and a remastered
picture and sound that can compete with anything on the market.
If you find yourself in the store, stuck about what to purchase,
you'd be a fool not to give The Asphyx a try . It is definitley
worth your time, and without a doubt worthy of this NextGenny.

Mentions : Dog Soldiers ( Artisan ) , Return
of the Living Dead ( MGM ) , All Monsters Attack ( All Day Entertainment

Release DVD of the Year (2002 )
Pulp Fiction
- Collectors Edition - Miramax
Pulp
Fiction changed the way we look at cinema. It revitalized the career
of John Travolta, it has scenes that will forever be remembered
and ranked with the elite of cinematic history. Miramax recognized
that fact and decided to rerelease this film on DVD with a treatment
that DVD's dream of. Definitley for fans of the films, cinematic
historians, and even for the unfortunate few who may have never
seen this gem. It is as worthy as a film can get for a NextGenny.

Mentions : Swingers ( Miramax ) , Reservoir
Dogs 10th Anniversary Edition ( Artisan ) , Major League ( Paramount

TV
to DVD Set of the Year (2002 )
The Simpsons
: Season 2 DVD Collection - Fox
It's
the greatest show of our time. Plain and simple, and when it came
down to choosing a TV to DVD Set of the Year it was not even a race.
This set is the best of the two, not only because 2 was the more
entertaining season, but because it is loaded with extras that everyone
will enjoy. Minus the annoying menus , there are no real flaws with
this set. It is a show enjoyed by millions daily, and is a show
worthy of this NextGenny.
Honorable
Mentions : Star Trek TNG Seasons 2-7 ( Paramount
) , Malcolm In The Middle ( Fox ) , Spongebob Squarepants Sea Stories
( Paramount ) |

DVD of the Year (2002 )
Kissing Jessica
Stein - Fox
People
loved this movie , raved about it. I was lukewarm to it and definitley
did not think it was worthy of the praise it recieved. As I stated
in my initial review " Maybe if I was a woman, a homosexual,
deaf, blind, or mentally unstable I would enjoy this film …
but seeing that none of the before-mentioned apply to me I can say
with every ounce of honesty that I just could not stand, could not
stomach, and had a tough time getting through watching this film.
" . Meaning mainly that it appeals to many, but not to
the majority. Therefore I give it this unfavorable NextGenny.

Complete Series ( Buena Vista ) |

Product of the Year ( 2002 )
5GHz Wireless
Network - D-Link
Networking
has come so very far in the last few years, and with the advent
of wireless technology, the industry continues to grow and grow.
But there has to be a compromise between affordability and usefulness,
and D-Link brought that together with their 5Ghz 802.11a networking
solution, which is hands down the product of choice for 2002.

DVD
of the Year ( 2002 )
Spider-Man
- Columbia TriStar
I thought
the movie was pretty decent given the heavy following and build
up in the media. Usually hype kills a movie, and fortunately Spider-Man
didn't suffer because of it. The DVD (2 included) on the other hand
is top notch and everything you'd want - has the features, interviews,
and technical features that anyone who collects DVDs would want.
Very few releases in 2002 offered up any competition to this set.
Honorable
Mentions : Pulp Fiction Collector's Edition
( Miramax) , Monsters, Inc. ( Disney ) |

Worst
DVD of the Year ( 2002 )
Cat People
- Universal
There
are times when you are reviewing a product and you wonder to yourself,
"What the bloody hell were they thinking" and none better
to bring that out than "Cat People" on DVD. Not only was
this cinematic diaherrea, the technical aspect of this DVD (picture
and sound) were enough to make you want to gouge out your eyes and
plug up your ears. Hopefully Universal will include a thumb tack
with this DVD so you can stab yourself in the arm to keep yourself
from dying of bad movie syndrome.

Mentions : Brotherhood of the Wolf ( Universal
) , Dragonfly ( Universal ) , Reign of Fire ( Buena Vista ), RollerBall

Best
DVD You Don't Own ( 2002 )
Kung Pow: Enter
The Fist - Fox
I know
I'll get a lot of shit over this, but I loved this movie and thought
it was genuinely hilarious and novel. The extras are pretty good
and the movie is just random enough to make it perfect for an evening
with the guys and some drinks for a good laugh. This movie's very
small budget didn't give it the publicity it deserved, and should
definitely be checked out by people who enjoy weird and random humor.

Release DVD of the Year ( 2002 )
Pulp Fiction
- Collectors Edition - Miramax
Definitely
a unanimous pick here at NextGen for this release. Props go out
to Miramax for FINALLY releasing the version of this DVD that we've
all been waiting for. Sure, they've milked this film for every dollar
they could (this is the THRID release of this film on DVD), but
this is finally the version to purchase. A definite must-buy.

TV
to DVD Set of the Year ( 2002 )
Star Trek:
The Next Generation Collection - Paramount
I'm
kinda surprised that my counterpart picked The Simpsons over the
Star Trek release, given that The Simpsons came with fewer extras.
So be it - it's a close race regardless, but the STTNG entire show's
7 years worth of episodes on 7 DVD sets wins my pick for this category.
The picture is amazing, the sound reworked to perfection, and all
the extras that Trekkers crave.
Honorable
Mentions : The Simpsons, Season 2 ( Fox ) ,
Malcolm In The Middle ( Fox ) |

DVD of the Year (2002 )
Ali - Columbia
TriStar
People
loved this movie , raved about it. Sound familiar? Well I thought
it was spectacularly average at best, and Will Smith's performance
amazingly uninspiring. Perhaps this was just a case of a movie we
all wanted to do well, and just barely satisfied our tastes. In
any event, this release came with zero features, and was an average
movie. Definitely the most overrated DVD on the market.

Mentions : Sanford and Son The First Season
( Columbia Tristar ) , Brotherhood of the Wolf ( Universal ) |
